The 2011 edition of the Quail Motorsports Gathering was held Friday, August 19th at the Quail Lodge Golf Club in Carmel, California. The 9th annual “Quail” once again celebrated the finest sports and racing automobiles and motorcycles, while offering wonderful food, drink and camaraderie among like-minded enthusiasts.
The 2011 Quail Motorsports Gathering honored Ferrari America and Superamerica models, a series of touring cars built in limited quantities in the 1950s and 1960s. They were often found with custom coachwork to back up their large V12 engine.
In addition to the honored Ferraris, the Quail also featured the 50th Anniversary of the Jaguar E-Type, Sports and Racing Motorcycles, famous for high speeds and optimum performance, the 50th Anniversary of Phil Hill’s Formula One World Drivers’ Championship and the Riverside International Raceway.
The 2011 Quail Motorsports Gathering also had classes for The Great Ferraris, Pre- and Post War Sports, Pre and Post-War Racing and Super Cars, among others. Featured entrants included the 1938 Talbot Lago T150C-SS Figoni et Falaschi Teardrop Coupe owned by Chip Connor, 1942 Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 SS of Richard Mattei, 1957 Ferrari 250 GT LWB Competizione Zagato entered by Rick Nash, Bruce McCaw’s 1959 Ferrari 250 TR59, 1966 Ford GT40 Mk 1 of Henry Davis and Doug Magnon’s 1966 All American Racers Indy Eagle.
Further automobiles and motorcycles on exhibit included 20 race cars from the Jaguar Run Group, which drove via police escort to Quail Lodge Golf Club from the nearby Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, and six of Gary Koh’s motorcycles from his MV Agusta Collection, including a 1972 MV Agusta 750S, one of 215 built between 1969 and 1980 and considered one of the most important motorcycles ever built; and a 1956 175 CSS Squalo Formula Sport, one of 200 and arguably one of the most spectacular Italian motorcycles ever crafted.
The Quail also honored the career of racing driver Derek Bell as a participant in the ‘Fireside Chat’ series, which debuted at The Quail last year with American racing icon Carroll Shelby. Bell sat down with Winston Goodfellow to discuss his storied career that saw multiple wins at Le Mans and Daytona.
Judging at the Quail Motorsports Gathering is different than traditional Concours because each car is judged by the other collectors competing in the same class. Only one car per class is honored with Best in Class, while they all compete for the Best of Show Award. This award, given at the Rolex Circle of Champions Awards Ceremony, called on all entrants to vote on the vehicle that achieved what they believe to be the best representation of historic excellence.
Best of Show at Quail Motorsports Gathering 2011 was awarded to the ex-Gianni Agnelli Pinin Farina-bodied 1955 Ferrari 375 America of Jack Thomas, while the Spirit of The Quail award went to the 1953 Siata 208CS Stabilimenti Farina Spyder of David Smith.
