The Cartier Style et Luxe at the Goodwood Festival of Speed 2011 is a Concours event displayed on the lawn of Goodwood House. Celebrating its 17th year at the Festival, the Cartier Style et Luxe Concours brings together a wonderful selection of motor cars, all competing for the Best of Show crown.

Classes at this year’s Cartier Style et Luxe Concours at Goodwood were split into seven categories, including a class for distinctive coachbuilt boat-tailed vehicles; 1930s streamlined people carriers; a celebration of the 50th anniversary of the iconic Jaguar E-type; coupes of the 1950s; post-War European people cars; cars with unusual means of entry and ‘comeback kids’ car marques.

Notable entries at the 2011 event included supercharged duo of the Bentley 4.5-litre Roadster and Auburn 851 Speedster; Ferrari 340 America; Abarth 1500 Biposta BAT 1; the sublime 1968 Alfa Romeo Tipo 33 Stradale; the unusual Mercedes-Benz 170 Kamm 3S and the wild Adams Probe 16, as used in the film A Clockwork Orange, among others.

Unlike a traditional Concours d’Elegance, the judges of the ‘Style et Luxe’ are not car experts but top personalities from the arts. Judging is not a scientific points-scoring process, but a consideration of each car as an object of beauty and practicality. The 2011 Cartier Style et Luxe Concours judging panel included iPod, iPad and iPhone creator Jonathan Ive, design entrepreneur Anya Hindmarch, adventurer and TV presenter Bear Grylls, rock star Roger Taylor, artist Julia Peyton-Jones, royal hat designer Philip Treacy and leading industrial designer Marc Newson.

Best of Show honors at the Goodwood Festival of Speed 2011 Cartier Style et Luxe Concours was awarded to David Cottingham’s 1951 Ferrari 340 America. Among the other winners, William Ainscough claimed the Boat-Tail Beauties category with his 1931 Bentley 41/2-Litre Supercharged Roadster while Kees Smit’s 1937 Tatra T77 was a worthy recipient of the Extreme Line prize for ‘Pre-War Streamlined Specials’. The People Power class went to the 1961 Renault 3 from the factory collection with the Comeback Kids gong going to Maarten de Buijn’s 1999 Spyker Silvestris V8 prototype.
