Parker Johnstone’s personal Acura Spice is the very car he drove to a record number of GTP Lights poles and wins in 1991-92. Originally a 1988 model powered by an “Iron Duke” Pontiac, it crashed and burned in ’89. Honda bought it and installed a 3.0 V6 from the then-new Acura NSX. This “test mule” promptly won the ’91 Rolex 24 at Daytona. “We could run as hard in the race as we did during qualifying,” explains Parker. “Everybody else, the Ferraris and Pontiacs and Buicks, had to bring the revs back substantially.”

Nearly 12 years ago, Parker Johnstone walked away from a strong career as a professional Indy car driver with 2 years left on a lucrative contract. Why? Frankly, he had turned to “almost despising”—his words—the sport he once loved.
But vintage racing has made him a fan again.
