The Road Racing Drivers Club’s seventh annual pre-Long Beach Grand Prix banquet this year honored three-time Indy 500 winner Bobby Unser with an “Evening with Bobby Unser presented by Firestone,” at the Long Beach Hilton. RRDC president Bobby Rahal again served as Master of Ceremonies and guided Unser through the highlights of his career in an often-hilarious storytelling session that delighted the capacity crowd. Among that audience were previous honorees Dan Gurney and Parnelli Jones, as well as Unser’s younger brother Al, himself a four-time Indy winner.
Bobby demonstrated his usual fine form in the role he’s best at, being himself, enthralling the audience with his memories. “I could talk about it forever,” he admitted. “I could tell a lot of stories. I have 35 years of good stories. It’s the most impressive night I think I’ve ever had in my life. Just look at all the people here that I just never, ever thought I’d see again. My mechanics are here, the guys who did all the work. It’s just an amazing night.”
