On January 26, 1906, Fred Marriott shocked the burgeoning automotive world when he drove the steam-powered Stanley Rocket Racer to a new World Land Speed Record of 127.659 at Ormond Beach, Florida—a record that would stand for an amazing four years.
On January 24–28, 2006, over 100 early gas- and steam-powered cars—including a recreation of the Stanley Rocket Racer—will take part in a four-day centennial celebration of both Stanley’s astounding achievement, as well as the many great speed attempts made at Ormond Beach in the first part of the 20th century. Planned festivities include recreations, demonstration runs and time trials on the beach, driving tours, dinners and even vintage plane fly-overs.
