I read with interest your piece in the October 2007 issue entitled, “Penske Panzer.” I found the article quite interesting. However, there are some comments that I would like to make to add to the story. The first of these is that the 1971 917/10 program with driver Jo Siffert was largely financed by Siffert and Volkswagen of America, not Porsche AG. Further, the first event for the car was the early July round of the Can-Am at Watkins Glen, at which weekend the Glen also hosted its annual Six-Hour FIA Manufacturers race. It was during this weekend that Siffert acquired STP sponsorship and overnight changed the previously all-white car to STP day-glo red.
