Fifteen years is a long time in the automotive world, and I suspect that within the evolution of the racing car it’s probably a number of generations.
At one point in time, I had the pleasure of being behind the wheel of a 1961 open-wheeler that was fitted with a pushrod, 1500-cc, 4-cylinder production-based engine, a transaxle that had previously seen service in a VW Beetle and was built by the welding of many round steel tubes, all of which sat on four relatively narrow treaded tires.
