The Arundell Challenge

The death of Peter Arundell promptsmemory of a challenge. Formula Junior was once Formula Arundell; he won twice as many major races as any other driver. Actually, the presence of Arundell and his Lotus defined what were major races.

After Arundell had won at the Nürburgring at the end of September 1962, two drivers, a German and an Austrian, complained that Lotus was cheating by running oversized engines. You can understand why they were miffed: their engines were way over the 1,100-cc limit and they couldn’t contend, so it followed that Lotus had to be cheating big time.
