The start of the Monaco Grand Prix remains one of motor racing’s true spectacles, and in this depiction of the opening moments of the 1971 contest through the streets of the Principality, we see the front row of Jackie Stewart’s Tyrrell (#11) and Jacky Ickx’s Ferrari (#4) lighting up their tires in their efforts to escape the horde behind them. The pursuers are led by the BRMs of Jo Siffert and Pedro Rodriguez, Denis Hulme’s McLaren, Jean-Pierre Beltoise’s Matra and Ronnie Peterson’s March, ahead of the rest. Stewart would lead all 80 laps to win by 25 seconds from runner-up Peterson and take another step toward the second of his three World Championships.
