Mike Kleeves of Automotive Metal Shaping, Kimball, Michigan, won the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance’s inaugural Phil Hill Trophy and Craftsman Tools Restorers Award for his restoration of the Aston Martin DB4GTZ of the Helena Collection, Santa Fe, New Mexico. The unique award was created to honor the artisan whose restoration of a classic, antique, historic or competition car is judged the best new restoration in its first concours appearance.
Mecum Auctions’ second-annual auction in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, held July 30-August 2 saw an unprecedented amount of collector cars, motorcycles, tractors and more cross the auction block with total sales reaching $20,566,598 and an overall sell-through rate of 67 percent. In just four days, a total of 1,016 vehicles, 135 motorcycles, 107 tractors and 405 Road Art items were offered for sale to a sea of ardent bidders as 20 hours of auction coverage were broadcast on NBC Sports Network.
RM Sotheby’s generated $7,425,450 with 79 percent of all lots sold at its annual Motor City sale, July 25 in Plymouth, Michigan. American classics led the charge with handsome 1930s examples commanding strong prices to secure the top three sales of the day. The star of the auction, a striking 1935 Duesenberg Model SJ Dual-Cowl Phaeton, originally owned by Duesenberg Motors President Lucius B. Manning, realized $852,500 after competition from numerous bidders on the phone and in the ballroom.
