The second annual Classic 24 at Daytona will be staged by Historic Sportscar Racing at Florida’s Daytona International Speedway on the weekend of November 12-15. Name drivers confirmed for the event include Jochen Mass, Bobby Rahal, Hurley Haywood, Danny Sullivan, Gijs van Lennep, Patrick Long, Elliott Forbes-Robinson, Scott Sharp, Dieter Quester, Didier André, Jean Marc Gounon and Jack Baldwin, among many others.
The event will also feature a tribute to the late John Greenwood, and his fantastic Corvette racecars on the Thursday, beginning with a panel discussion, following with a display of those cars from noon to 3 p.m., and closing with a 4 p.m. reception. A pair of Greenwood Corvettes will actually take part in the Classic 24 Hour itself, as the French-based Caldentey Engineering team is returning to Daytona with drivers Didier André, French Porsche Carrera Cup standout Jules Gounon and his father, former F1 driver Jean Marc Gounon, entered in 1976 and 1979 Greenwood Corvettes.
A number of examples of Porsche’s legendary 962 will also contest the Classic 24, with two of them (above) coming from Europe as Ireland’s Celtic Speed team brings its Leyton House/Kremer entry (chassis 118), and Denmark’s Xtec Engineering enters it Tic Tac 962 (chassis 141), while United Autosports presents its ex-Dyson Racing machine (chassis 120). United Autosports will also enter its Porsche 935 JLP-3, the first racecar ever to win both the Daytona 24 and Sebring 12 Hour races overall in the same year.
The Classic 24 itself features six period-correct run groups rotating through a full 24 hours of racing on the 3.56-mile Daytona road course. Each run group takes to the track four times during the 24 hours, with the competitors who cover the most total distance in their group’s four sessions crowned Classic 24 at Daytona presented by IMSA champions.
