Gooding Christie’s will offer a highly significant 1973 Ferrari Dino 246 GTS (Estimate: $750,000 – $1,000,000) at its upcoming Pebble Beach Auctions. Chassis 06698 stands out as a unique example, having remained in the ownership of musician Steve Winwood since new. The right-hand-drive E-series Dino is one of just five Chairs and Flares examples delivered new to the United Kingdom. It is also the only UK-delivered example originally finished in Nocciola Metallizzato (Metallic Hazelnut) with black upholstery, making it one of the rarest factory specifications of the model.
Steve Winwood
Born in Birmingham in 1948, Steve Winwood established himself as one of the leading musicians of the British Invasion. A gifted keyboardist, guitarist and vocalist, he rose to prominence with the Spencer Davis Group, recording international hits including “Gimme Some Lovin’” and “I’m a Man.”
By the early 1970s, Winwood had built a reputation as an accomplished performer, songwriter and producer. His solo career continued to earn worldwide acclaim, highlighted by the success of his fourth studio album, Back in the High Life (1986), which produced several award-winning singles, including “Higher Love.”
It is a wonderful car, and I believe it should be driven and enjoyed rather than simply kept in storage,” said Steve Winwood. “The time has come for me to pass it on to someone else who can take pleasure in it and create their own memories, just as I have.
Chassis 06698
Chassis 06698 is the only Dino 246 GTS delivered new to the United Kingdom with its original combination of wider Campagnolo wheels and Daytona seat inserts. The car was purchased new by Winwood through Sytner of Mapperley in Nottingham via official Ferrari importer Maranello Concessionaires Ltd. and has remained in his collection for more than five decades.
Roughly 20 years ago, Winwood commissioned respected Ferrari specialist Bob Houghton to restore the car, during which it was refinished in its current dark blue exterior over tan leather upholstery. The Dino is now offered with extensive documented history compiled by Ferrari historians Tony Willis and Matthias Bartz.
“It is an extraordinary honor to offer this Dino at Pebble Beach,” said David Brynan, Senior Specialist at Gooding Christie’s. “An outstanding one-owner example of the coveted ‘Chairs and Flares’ 246 GTS, this car is made all the more significant by its remarkable provenance, having been owned, driven, and lovingly preserved for 52 years by one of the defining musicians of the era.”
Coming to Monterey
The Winwood Dino is among the first consignments announced for Gooding Christie’s Pebble Beach Auctions, scheduled for Friday, August 14, and Saturday, August 15, at the Pebble Beach Parc du Concours.
