Rhode Island’s Newport Car Museum has been named one of America’s 10 Best New Attractions by USA Today. The museum, which opened last June, was the only nominee from New England on an original list of 20 attractions selected by a panel of travel experts. It also was the only automobile museum.
“We’re so happy that we could create a museum of this quality in the area,” said Newport Car Museum Founder Gunther Buerman. “It’s designed to appeal to both men and women and multiple generations.”
“Unlike other car museums,” he added, “there are no velvet ropes around the cars; they are on platforms and you can get up close and personal with them. You also can relax on some iconic Mid-Century modern furniture and race any car on pretty much any race course in the world on one of our driving simulators.”
NCM artistically showcases a private collection of some 60 automobiles in a 115,000-square foot building formerly used for manufacturing missiles. In each its five galleries — Ford/Shelby, Corvette (above, photo courtesy of NCM), Fin Car, World Car and Mopar — a video relates the history of the models on display.
Newport Car Museum tickets can be bought at the door or by visiting www.newportcarmuseum.org where more information and directions are available.
