The McLardo Formula One team was proud to announce today the in utero signing of its next driving champion Clive/Calista Shoemaker, to a life-time management deal to commence upon his (or perhaps her) birth this coming August. Team principle Don Rennis, stated that he was pleased to sign the reputedly promising young driver, despite his/her having not been born yet. According to Rennis, “With the signing of Baby Shoemaker, I believe our development ladder is more complete, ensuring a continuous pipeline of racing talent for the next two decades. I’m also pleased to announce that just this morning, we’ve picked up sponsorship from Enfamil formula and Huggies diapers, which will adorn the airbox of this year’s McLardo…”
You may be asking yourself what ridiculous flight of fancy is this—and quite frankly I would too! However, it may very well be just a matter of time before we read a press release not too dissimilar from this one. The reason I say this is because in January, the McLaren Formula One team sent out a press release announcing the signing of 14-year-old Nyck de Vries, to the team’s young driver development program. Wow, 14! At 14, I was building Ferrari models and sneaking peeks at my dad’s Playboy collection, while this kid is a contracted driver at McLaren? Where did I go wrong?
