Have you ever seen a Commuter? I’m talking about a 1959 Mercury Commuter two-door station wagon. Not many of us have, because they only built 1,051 of them that year and time, and of course commuting, has taken its toll on them. In fact, there were only 148,946 of the more common four-door models built as well.
Mercury— and the Ford Motor Company in general— was recovering from the economic recession of the late 1950s, along with the disastrously timed introduction of their new Edsel in 1958, and things didn’t really get better for the Mercury division until 1962 with the introduction of the new compact Comet.
