Skip Barber, founder of the Skip Barber Racing School and owner of Connecticut’s Lime Rock Park, will serve as Grand Marshal at the 2015 Savannah Speed Classic sanctioned by Historic Sportscar Racing and presented by Mingledorff’s, October 23–25, 2015.
“I’m quite honored to be brought to Savannah to Grand Marshal the Speed Classic,” said Barber. “I’m happy to ‘return,’ if you will, to this wonderful city; I’m not sure how many people remember, but the Barber Dodge Pro Series raced on the 1.9-mile Hutchinson Island Circuit in 1997. Derek Hill won the pole and the race, and Rocky Moran Jr., set fastest lap. Coming back is terrific.”
Barber’s racing career began in 1958 while he was a student at Harvard. His natural-born speed and feel for a racecar virtually ensured success, and he won his first race. His career produced many highlights, including winning three SCCA National Championships in two years, 1969 and 1970, as he won Formula Ford both years and Formula B as well in 1970. He went on to race in F1 and Formula 5000, but in 1975, founded the school that bears his name with two borrowed Lola Formula Fords. Upon realizing that he enjoyed the challenges of designing, managing and growing a new business, he turned his focus to the school.
