Sergio Scaglietti celebrated his 90th birthday on January 9, and at his party received a special gift from Piero Ferrari, vice president of the company founded by his father and for which the great Sergio sculpted the lines of some of the most beautiful Ferraris ever created. His present? The nosecone of Felipe Massa’s F2008.
Carrozzeria Scaglietti contributed to the success of Ferrari more or less from the moment the legendary Prancing Horse was established. Scaglietti worked exclusively for Enzo Ferrari, with just a handful of exceptions, from the outset.
Although modest in the extreme, from his pencil and deft handiwork came such masterpieces as the Ferrari 500 Mondial, 250 Testa Rossa, the 250 GTO, 860 Monza, 250 California, 375 America, 365 GTB/4/Daytona, and the Dinos 206 and 246 to name but a few.
Sergio’s sons Oscar and Claudio joined Carrozzeria Scaglietti in 1959, 16 years after which Ferrari acquired a majority shareholding in the company so that it became an integral part of Maranello, which it has remained to this day.
Such is the esteem in which Sergio Scaglietti is held that Ferrari paid the Modenese atelier the greatest tribute it knew how in 2004 by naming a car after him: the Ferrari 612 Scaglietti.
