RM Auctions Monterey 2014 – Auction Preview

The RM Auctions Monterey 2014 auction will be held August 15th and 16th at the Portola Hotel and Monterey Convention Center in Monterey, California. RM’s 29th annual flagship two-day Monterey sale will feature 36 cars estimated to sell in excess of $1 million and five estimated to bring more than $4 million.

In 2013, the RM Monterey sale generated $125 million, entering the history books as the highest grossing collector car auction of all time. This year’s sale is set to eclipse this figure, with a selection of 130 automobiles focused on Ferraris and historic sports and racing cars. Headline consignments at the 2014 RM Auctions Monterey sale include the 1965 Ford GT40 Roadster Prototype; 1964 Ferrari 250 LM by Scaglietti; 1963 Ferrari 400 SA LWB Coupe Aerodinamico Series II by Pininfarina; 1911 Mercer Type 35R Raceabout; 1964 Ferrari 275 GTB/C Speciale by Scaglietti; 1931 Bentley 8-Litre Sports Coupe Cabriolet by Barker; 1960 Aston Martin DB4GT and the ex-Steve McQueen 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4 by Scaglietti.

The 2014 RM Auctions Monterey sale presents a stable of 32 Ferraris. Representing more than 50 years of production, the selection spans from a 1953 Ferrari 250 Europa Coupe by Pinin Farina to a 2006 Ferrari FXX Evoluzione. Notable highlights include:

  • 1986 March 86C Indianapolis, chassis no. 86C-13, winner of the 1986 Indianapolis 500 and CART IndyCar Championship, it was driven by Indianapolis Speedway Hall of Famer Bobby Rahal and is equipped with its original Indy 500-winning Cosworth DFX V-8 (Est. $1,750,000 – $2,500,000);
  • 1963 Lola Mk 6 GT, chassis no. LGT-2, the last of three examples produced, it is the winner of the 1963 Nassau Tourist Trophy and has been piloted by American racing legends Augie Pabst and Walt Hansgen (Est. $1,500,000 – $2,000,000);
  • 1966 Shelby 427 Cobra, chassis no. CSX 3359, authentic example including original “sunburst” wheels and blue dot tires, has only 1,819 original miles and history since new documented by the SAAC (Est. $1,400,000 – $1,800,000); and
  • 1986 Porsche 962 IMSA GTP, chassis no. 962/F01 (HR3F), owned from new by Hotchkis Racing and raced by the Hotchkis family for decades (Est. $800,000 – $1,000,000 / Video).

  • 1931 Bentley 8-Litre Sports Coupe Cabriolet by Barker, only original two-passenger roadster built on an 8-Litre chassis; One-off “boattail” design by Barker; Matching-numbers chassis, engine, and gearbox; Verified by Bentley authority Clare Hay. (Est $3,750,000 – $4,750,000);
  • 1963 Maserati 5000 GT by Frua, chassis no. AM103.064, the first of only two Frua-bodied examples, it was the 1962 Geneva and Paris show car (Est. $2,200,000 – $2,900,000);
  • 1960 Aston Martin DB4GT, chassis no. DB4/GT/0119/L, an original U.S.-delivery, left-hand-drive example purchased new by Chicago sportsman Edward Gaylord (Est. $2,200,000 – $2,600,000);
  • 1971 Lamborghini Miura SV, chassis no. 4942, finished in Giallo Miura with a black leather interior and the recipient of a photo-documented restoration (Est. $1,800,000 – $2,400,000);
  • 1948 Tucker 48, chassis no. 1036, an American legend on wheels formerly of the Bob Pond Collection and equipped with the rare Tucker Y-1 transmission (Est. $1,400,000 – $1,600,000);

In 2013, RM Auctions offered 119 automobiles for sale, with 104 finding a new owner, reflecting a 87.4% sell-through rate. Total sales volume was $124,993,250, inclusive of buyer’s premiums. The average price per car sold was $1,201,858. Top sale went to the 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4*S NART Spider at $27,500,000, followed by the 1953 Ferrari 375 MM Spider at $9,075,000 and the 1928 Mercedes-Benz 680S Torpedo Saoutchik Roadster at $8,250,000. The RM Auctions Sports and Classics of Monterey event returns to the Portola Hotel and Monterey Convention Center, August 15-16, 2014. The auction preview will be held August 13th through 16th, with the auction taking place the evening of Friday, August 15th and Saturday, August 16th.
