McLaren Automotive will return to the Goodwood Festival of Speed next weekend, June 23-26, with a celebration of race wins and titles spanning more than five decades. McLaren will honor its drivers and championships with the ultimate expression of the Festival’s 2016 theme of “Full Throttle – The Endless Pursuit of Power.”
McLaren House will populate the lawns of the Goodwood Estate with iconic racecars displayed alongside the full range of modern-day McLaren models. The selection of machinery spanning more than 50 years of the marque will be the most extensive display of McLaren models ever showcased, and will include the new 570GT.
The 2016 season is a key anniversary for motorsport, and McLaren in particular, as milestones of note include the 50th anniversary of the Can-Am series, the 100th running of the Indy 500, 40 years since British racing legend James Hunt’s dramatic World Championship and 30 years since Alain Prost claimed the second of his four world titles—both aboard McLarens.
The legendary no-holds-barred Can Am series of the 1960s and ’70s was revered as the ultimate test of engineering and bravery, and five consecutive championships established McLaren as the team to beat. Three of the 100 runnings of the Indy 500 have been won by McLarens — in 1972, 1974 (above) and 1976 — and half a century has passed since McLaren entered the Formula One World Championship, where it has collected a dozen Driver Championships and eight Constructor crowns.
Also being observed at the Festival will be 100 Years of BMW, often a partner of McLaren in automotive endeavors. For complete information about the Festival of Speed, please visit www.goodwood.com
