In 1966, Ford’s Advanced Concepts Department was commissioned to develop a new, two-seat, mid-engined sports car designed to both compete with the Chevrolet Corvette on the retail front, but also be competitive in SCCA A-Production and FIA Group 3 GT racing. Though the initial running prototype was built on a Mustang platform, the 289-cu.in. V8 powered Mach 2 was not designed to be a part of the Mustang family. While three initial examples were constructed for testing, two were known to be crushed after the program was ended. The whereabouts of the third example, painted in red, is unknown.
