Mecum Auctions will celebrate its 30th anniversary at its original Spring Classic Auction in Indianapolis from May 16-21, where some 2,000 consignments will cross the block at the Indiana State Fairgrounds.
The six-day Spring Classic auction is considered the largest and best muscle-car auction anywhere, and has historically attracted valuable consignments from across North America. Leading the way at this year’s event is a black 1965 Ford Mustang (above, David Newhardt photo courtesy of Mecum Auctions) with serial number 00002 that is recognized as the first Mustang hardtop to receive a VIN.
Also crossing the block this year are cars from several notable private collections including that of the late Columbus, Ohio-based collector Bob McDorman, that numbers more than 40 cars, 22 of which are Corvettes. Among them is a 1953 Corvette roadster with serial number 64 of the 300 produced in 1953. All of the McDorman vehicles will cross the block at no reserve during the catalog collection showcase on Thursday, May 18.
Collections from Dennis Albaugh, Larry Klairmont and Mike Guarise will be other 2017 auction highlights, as well as nine desirably optioned vehicles from the Jim Lynch Collection and 30 classic muscle cars at no reserve from the Dallas and Ammie Hawkins Collection. Renowned Yenko collector Cliff Ernst will bring a selection of vehicles that includes a 1969 Chevrolet Yenko Camaro, a 1970 Chevrolet Yenko Deuce and a 1968 Ford Mustang Cobra Jet raced by “Dyno” Don Nicholson.
