The Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale 2016 Auction will be held January 23-31 at the WestWorld facility in Scottsdale, Arizona. Barrett-Jackson’s 45th annual Arizona Auction Week sale will feature the largest docket in its history, with more than 1,500 classics, exotics, muscle cars, hot rods, resto-mods and more set to cross the auction block.
“Our 2016 Scottsdale auction is particularly meaningful because it celebrates our 45th anniversary,” said Craig Jackson, chairman and CEO of Barrett-Jackson. “My father, Russ Jackson, and his friend, Tom Barrett, started the auction with one auction and a few select cars. Our 45th anniversary is as much about our future as our past and that’s why we continue to bring new assets to our events, such as the Experts’ Symposiums.”
New to the 45th Anniversary Scottsdale Auction will be the Experts’ Symposiums held early in the week. Here, enthusiasts can get an idea about what to look for when buying a car and hear from Barrett-Jackson’s team of experts. This team works at each event to help review certain high-end and rare cars that may be represented, by the consignor, as having matching numbers or documented with show provenance. Returning in 2016 for the fifth consecutive year is the Salon Collection, which offers consignments that represent some of the most influential moments in automotive history and the best of what Barrett-Jackson has to offer. Among the cars rolling across the block, we found particular interest in the 1950 Ferrari 195 S Inter Superleggera. Chassis# 0081 S would make a fine dual-purpose machine eligible for events such as the Mille Miglia, Colorado Grand and Coppa d’Oro delle Dolomiti. Given its comfortable accommodations and impressive performance (comparable to a 166 MM), this early 5-speed Ferrari is particularly well-suited for rallies and driving events. This 195 S is offered with a tool kit, jack and manuals, as well as a complete report compiled by Marcel Massini that includes ownership history and copies of the original Ferrari Build Sheets. As the first chassis in the 195 series and a former Torino show car with singular features, this Touring Coupe presents a most enticing opportunity.
Representing the classic cars Barrett-Jackson began selling 45 years ago, a 1947 Talbot-Lago T-26 Worblaufen Cabriolet will be one of the featured consignments in Scottsdale. This is one of three Talbot-Lago T-26 Cabriolets built by the Carrosserie Worblaufen of Switzerland. Worblaufen was one of the most important Swiss coachbuilders for passenger cars, producing many elegant cabriolets and roadsters on prewar Isotta-Fraschini, Mercedes-Benz, Alfa Romeo and Bugatti chassis. After World War II, they worked on Talbot-Lago, Delahaye, Bentley and Lancia. The sporty chassis of the Talbot-Lago T-26 was a favorite of European coachbuilders. The T-26 Cabriolet has a 4.5-liter, 6-cylinder engine and a Wilson pre-selector gearbox that was used in both Talbot race and road cars. This car is being offered for sale for the first time in 24 years.
Another offering from the Salon Collection is a 1934 Rolls Royce Phantom II Kellner Cabriolet. Described to have been originally delivered in May 1934 to Edmond Blawl of St. Cloud, France, this Phantom II is a marriage of one of the most desirable chassis of its day with the coachwork of one of France’s most respected body builders, Kellner. Acquired later by K.C. Dobson of Surrey, England, and subsequently purchased by Sir Ashley Haveden in 1951, the Rolls-Royce would eventually make its way to the United States where it would undergo restoration later in its life. The low-mile example was shown at the 1990 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance where it would earn a Gwenn Graham Award for the Most Elegant Open Car and the following year score a Best of Show award at both the Chicago International Concours d’Elegance and the Fisher Island Concours d’Elegance.
Sports and racing car lovers needn’t worry, as Barrett-Jackson will provide a healthy offering of lots to keep everyone satisfied. Here are some of the additional offerings bidders can expect to see:
- 1948 Kurtis Kraft KK 2000, A 1959 Indianapolis 500 veteran, this Kurtis appeared at the sacred event five times and is described to have never been wrecked
- 1953 Delahaye 235 Saoutchik Coupe, Representing one of the final products for both Delahaye and Saoutchik, this 235 has made two appearances to the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance
- 1959 Chevrolet Corvette “Purple People Eater”, From the Chip Miller collection, this Corvette has a rich racing history that includes securing the 1959 SCCA B-production Championship
- 1965 Porsche 356 SC Cabriolet, This attractive liveried 356 Cabriolet represents the tail end of the 356 series and offers enthusiasts a highly useable option for classic, open motoring experience
- 1977 Porsche 911 Turbo, A desirable early 3.0L 930, this car was admirably equipped and delivered new to Southern California eventually spending the next 36 years in the Golden State
Most collectors find interest in having the first or last example of anything to help ‘book-end’ a collection. Wise to this, Barrett-Jackson will make an effort to appeal to the Corvette collectors with not one, but three C1 Corvettes bearing the “001” serial number designation being sold as a package. In addition to the 1955-1957 “001” Vettes, they’ll also be offering the now famous “Entombed” Vette.
- 1954 Chevrolet “Entombed” Corvette, Showing only 2,335 miles use, the now famous “Entombed Corvette” has a bizarre ownership story that involves being stored for decades inside a brick vault within a grocery store in Maine
- 1955 Chevrolet Corvette Serial Number 001, Representing the first Vette to use the ubiquitous small-block V8 and 12V electrical system, this restored example is described as complete and correct in every detail
- 1956 Chevrolet Corvette Serial Number 001, This ’56 is the earliest production example and is described to have even had much of its fiberglass bodywork hand laid because normal production panels weren’t ready at the time
- 1957 Chevrolet Corvette Serial Number 001, This Cascade Green ’57 Vette underwent an award-winning restoration that’s helped earn the highest “Top Flight” status within the National Corvette Restorers Society
“I couldn’t be more excited about the docket of Corvettes that are consigned for our 45th Anniversary Auction in Scottsdale this coming January,” said Craig Jackson, Chairman and CEO of Barrett-Jackson. “We always have exceptional groupings of Corvettes at our auctions, but this may be the best we’ve ever consigned.”
Contrasting sharply from their sports cars and grand classics being offered are the fun offerings from Hollywood director, Michael Bay and Paramount Pictures which includes lots that were featured in Bay’s “Transformers 4: Age of Extinction”. The following are sure to satisfy the younger audience of car lovers:
- 1992 Peterbilt 379 “Transformer’s Optimus Prime” Stunt Truck, This Peterbilt played the part of “Optimus Prime” in the fourth edition of the Michael Bay franchise, “Transformers”
- 1967 Chevrolet Camaro SS “Transformer’s Bumblebee” Resto-Mod, While there isn’t much ’67 Camaro SS left in this creation, this Resto-Mod movie car was thoroughly modernized for its current owner, Michael Bay
The Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale 2016 Auction will be staged January 23-31 at the WestWorld facility in Scottsdale, Arizona. Live coverage will be broadcast on Velocity and Discovery during 36 hours of live TV coverage from Tuesday through Sunday, January 26-31.
