Goodwood Revival 2015 – Goodwood Trophy Report and Photos
1934 Bugatti Type 59 and 1934 Alfa Romeo Tipo B
The Goodwood Trophy race at the Goodwood Revival 2015 was held 12th September at the 2.4-mile Goodwood Motor Circuit in West Sussex, England.
This race featured Grand Prix ‘titans’ and more nimble voiturette cars of a type that raced between 1930 and 1950. These sit-up-and-beg single seaters thundered around the fast and spectacular track, just as they did in the circuit’s earliest years. This year’s race featured an incredible lineup of iconic ERAs and Alfa Romeos taking on Maseratis, Bugatti and Talbot-Lagos, among others.
Serial Goodwood winner Mark Gilles dominated Saturday’s first race in Dick Skipworth’s ex-Raymond Mays factory ERA R3A. The light green voiturette took the lead at Fordwater on the second lap and pulled away to win by over 15 seconds. It was Gilles’s fifth win victory in the Goodwood Trophy.
The 2015 Goodwood Trophy featured 10 ERAs in the entry and it was another of these, Nick Topliss’s A-type, the ex-Pat Fairfield R4A, that spectacularly smoked off the line from second row, powering between those ahead and into the lead. The moment of glory did not last long, with Calum Lockie also taking the ERA in Sean Danaher’s Maserati 6CM.
Lockie made second place his own, but was unable to catch the flying leader. Topliss, however, found Michael Gans on his tail in another of the ERAs, R1B. Gans tried hard to take the final podium place but, with the pair now among the backmarkers, Topliss was able to hold on, a just reward for such a spectacular start.
