Wisconsin’s rolling kettle moraine hills will resound to the roar of vintage racing Volvos when Elkhart Lake’s Road America hosts the 2006 Volvo Gran Prix September 15–17. More than 35 vintage Volvo racecars from across the U.S. and Canada are expected to attend with Volvo being the featured marque at the Vintage Sports Car Drivers Association’s Fall Vintage Festival. This annual racing weekend regularly attracts nearly 300 vintage and historic racecars of all types for three full days of practice, qualifying, and races. Models will range from the early PV544, P1800 and 122 cars and the later 142 sedans. They will run in production classes in addition to an all-Volvo feature race. Volvo Cars of North America is also expected to have a display of their new cars for the benefit of racers and spectators alike.
The first Volvo Gran Prix was held at Blackhawk Farms Raceway in Northern Illinois in 1996 with nearly 20 cars in attendance, some from as far away as California. Since then, the Vintage Volvo Racers Group has gathered every other year at tracks in the Midwest and East for great racing and to celebrate the marque.
