The Mecum Monterey Auction 2013 was held August 15-17 at the Hyatt Regency Monterey Hotel and Spa in Monterey, California, resulting in total sales of $31,620,748.

With more than 50 Porsches offered among the nearly 700 other automobiles, it’s no surprise that the top sale at the 5th annual Mecum Monterey sale went to one of Stuttgart’s finest, the 1955 Porsche 550/1500 RS Spyder that sold for $3,750,000.

Offered from the Peter and Cheryl Dunkel Collection, chassis number 550-0077 was actively campaigned by European driver Goethals, winning the 1500CC class at the GP des Frontiers in Chimay and the Coupe de Salon in Montlhéry among numerous strong showings. The well-documented racer earned the title of most expensive 550 ever sold at auction.

The second seat in the top 10 list was claimed off the block by the 1961 Chevrolet Corvette Gulf Race Car – a back-to-back SCCA B-Production National Champion and the first formally sponsored Corvette champ – at a sale price of $1,400,000. Third on the list to break the million-dollar mark was the one-owner, 500 original-mile 1990 Ferrari F40 that sold for $1,325,000.

Additional results at the 2013 Mecum Monterey sale included the 1930 Duesenberg Model J Torpedo Phaeton at $950,000, the 1964 Shelby Cobra 289 Independent Competition that brought $925,000 and the 1968 Chevrolet Corvette L88 Convertible that made $800,000.

Other notable sales included the 2006 Ford GT Heritage Edition, driven less than six miles since new, that sold for a strong $377,500 while another low-mileage car with a few more years under its belt saw a similar result; an original and unrestored, 902 actual-mile 1969 Ford Mustang Boss 429 Fastback sold for $550,000 – more than twice what comparable 429s have sold for at other auctions.
