C.L. “Charlie” Earwood who rose to prominence as a driver, promoter and official in the top levels of American sports car racing, has passed away at his home in Punta Gorda, Florida, at the age of 89.
Following a successful career in the insurance industry, Earwood retired to pursue the passion he had for his family, fishing and sports car racing. He joined the SCCA in 1960, racing E and F Production Porsches, and soon introduced his sons, Terry and Stephen, to the sport as well. Eventually, Earwood stopped driving and moved into organization, serving as Chief Steward with both the SCCA and IMSA, where he oversaw multiple series and major events.
