The 1964 Ford GT40 lightweight prototype (chassis GT/104) that finished 3rd in the 1965 24 Hours of Daytona, has sold for $7 million at Mecum Auctions’ April sale at the Reliant Center in Houston, Texas. GT/104 is one of the two Ford prototypes prepared and raced by Shelby American during the 1965 season, and one of the first racecars of any kind to benefit from computerized missile aerodynamics technology and the budding field of telemetry. As the very first 1965 Shelby American-specification GT40, chassis GT/104 is widely regarded as the most original and correct Shelby American prototype. It was the top seller from a Mecum Auction that totaled more than $33.5 million in sales, with a nearly 70 percent sell-through rate.
