The Moss Trophy at the 2014 Goodwood Members’ Meeting was held Saturday, March 29th at the 2.4-mile Goodwood Motor Circuit in West Sussex, England. The race for closed cockpit GT cars of a type that raced between 1958 and 1962 was held in honor of long-time Goodwood supporter Sir Stirling Moss. The racing knight is inextricably linked with the circuit, having competed at Goodwood in all manner of machinery from single-seaters to GT cars. Sir Stirling famously won back-to-back Tourist Trophy races at Goodwood aboard Rob Walker’s Ferrari 250 GT SWB Berlinetta in 1960-61.
The two-driver Moss Trophy race line-up was representative of the Tourist Trophy grids from an era before sports-prototypes moved the goalposts. Ferrari 250 GT SWBs competed against steel-bodied Jaguar E-types, AC Cobras and Aston Martin DB4GT Zagatos over 60 thrilling minutes. A fan favorite among the rare entries was the 1961 Ferrari 250 GT SWB ‘Breadvan’ piloted by Martin Halusa and Rob Hall.
With the race running into dusk, the Moss Trophy brought the opening day to a close with a battle between two heavyweights of British engineering all the way to the finish line. The Aston Martin DB4GT of Wolfgang Friedrichs and Simon Hadfield eventually emerged triumphant over the Lotus 11 GT ‘Breadvan’ driven by Joe Twyman and Oliver Bryant, but only after a scintillating scrap over the final few laps that resulted in Hadfield and Bryant — driving a less powerful, but more nimble car — swapping the lead several times. Both cars came to the fore when Jeremy Cottingham, who had led at one stage, began to fall back when darkness descended, due to poor visibility from behind the wheel of his Jaguar E-type. Cottingham, sharing the car with his brother James, completed the podium. The opening section of the race had been a hard-fought affair between the fan favorite Ferrari 250 SWB GT ‘Breadvan’ of Rob Hall and Le Mans 24 Hours winner Jackie Oliver in a Ferrari 250 GT SWB Competition Berlinetta, which ended when a rear tyre issue slowed Oliver. Hall’s co-driver, Martin Halusa, fell to fifth by the finish.

The Ferrari Breadvan works visually but to me the Lotus does not. Obviously fast as snot though! Great pics Tim.
