The revival of one of history’s most popular production car-based series, the fabled SCCA Trans-Am, is in the works for 2009. Plans to resuscitate the sport sedan series that was euthanized after its 40th season in 2005 were announced at mid-December’s Performance Racing Industry trade show in Orlando, Florida.
The revived series, which will require cars to conform to SCCA Club Racing GT1 specifications, will be sponsored by Muscle Milk, a powdered protein supplement marketed by CytoSport, the California company owned by series stalwart Greg Pickett.
“The re-birth of Trans-Am,” said SCCA president and CEO Jim Julow, “begins in 2009 with a grassroots-based series that has the potential to grow in the coming years into a full professional racing series. I would like to thank Jim Derhaag for his tireless efforts to help put some of the critical pieces together, and Muscle Milk for coming on board as title sponsor to make the series a reality.”
The proposed schedule includes eight races run in conjunction with premier SCCA National event weekends, five of which were announced in Orlando: March 22, Road Atlanta; April 19, Virginia International; May 17, Mosport; June 14, Portland; and July 12, Watkins Glen.
