It was still very early days for the small, but growing firm of Lotus Cars. In just nine short years, Colin Chapman’s designs had evolved from an Austin 7-based trials special with a plywood and alloy body, to a sophisticated spaceframe design in what could have been called volume production.
The Lotus Eleven was built between 1956 and 1958, and if you call a total production of 271 a significant volume, well Lotus Cars was on its way to a great future.
