Two weeks ago, in announcing the 2016 SVRA race schedule, we noted that one date, in conjunction with the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance, was pending approval by the FAA for the use of nearby Fernandina Beach Municipal Airport. That approval has now been given and the date for the invitational race has been confirmed as March 17-20, one week after the Concours.
Bill Warner, founder and chairman of The Amelia Island Concours d’ Elegance and Foundation, extended a warm welcome to the SVRA: “Tony Parella (CEO of SVRA) runs a superb organization and brings to Amelia Island a world class racing event. It will be a perfect addition to March on Amelia Island.”
A 2.4-mile road circuit will be created at the airport so that one runway will be left open to accommodate the vintage aircraft that will also be part of the show. The event actually marks a return of racing to the Fernandina Airport, as sports cars once raced on the airfield during the 1960s. SVRA’s Amelia Island Vintage Gran Prix will focus on racecars from pre-war and the decades ranging from the 1950s to about 1980, eras that pre-date the heavy influence of aerodynamic technologies.
