The 2009 Silverstone Classic was held July 24-26 at the Silverstone Circuit in England.
On Saturday morning, the Under Two Liter Touring Cars race was dominated by the competition between the BMW 1800 TiSA of Jackie Oliver and Richard Shaw and the Ford Lotus Cortina piloted by Andy Wolfe and Rob Hall.
From the first corner, front row race starters Andy Wolfe and Jackie Oliver vied for the overall race leader’s position, but making it a close run race all the way. By the fifth lap, with only half a second between them. Oliver was out in front but Wolfe never let him out of his sight and, despite hitting the dirt a number of times, Woolfe was firmly in the lead by lap ten with a 2.5 second lead with over 30 minutes of racing still to go.
With plenty of overtaking and near-touches, the second drivers in each car after the mandatory pit stop maintained the competition to result in a race win for Andy Wolfe and Rob Hall, second place for Jackie Oliver and Richard Shaw, and third for Leo Voyazides and Simon Hadfield in their Ford Lotus Cortina. Rob Hall took the fastest lap on his final round.

Mamma mia! Look at the alfa! Wonderful.
I’d love to have gone myself. I’ve gone to every classic festival at Silverstone since it was called the Coy’s Historic in the 90s. Last year was great, yet this year the ticket price doubled. New organisers! I sincerely hope other people did the same thing and stayed away. Maybe next year the organisers will come to their senses and lower the price again.
Max is right about the alfa.
I love to see the lotus cortinas and the mini cooper S’s battling it out. They used to run with the galaxies and falcons too. Such a thing to see the mighty galaxy overtaking the minis down the straight, and then having to brake half a mile before the bend and then get swamped by the minis going around it, under it, over it through the bend and the the galaxy thundering by again.
OMG. Just thinking about the Galaxies and Falcons just gave me goose pimples. Right indeed. The Minis were a like a swarm of hornets in the bends.
We second the goosebumps. What a great mental image you conjured up.
Thanks for sharing.
Oh yes the images and sensations are still very vivid in my mind. As I am gearing up to take my old MK3 “S” Mini to race again. There’s really an immense truth about these venerable Minis – “Bends the rules, Rules the bends”. The best of England I must say.
Thank you Sports Car Digest for lighting the fire again. God bless you lads.
It is more than our pleasure – thanks. We look forward to seeing your Mini on the track.
