In “Sunshine, Speed and a Surprise” author Joel Finn takes an extremely detailed look at the first USGP, held at Sebring in 1959, and the events that led up to it. The 1959 Formula One season was notable for many reasons, not the least of which being the shift of dominance from front-engined to rear-engined racecars. Coopers were the cars to drive that season, and as the season wound to a close, it was a neck-and-neck battle between Stirling Moss and Jack Brabham for the drivers championship. This tight battle would be decided at the final race of the season, a new event, the United States Grand Prix, to be held at a sleepy airport called Sebring, in Florida.
