The aspect of motor racing which I admire the most is the production racing car industry. You can make a mediocre road car – the Chrysler Neon springs unbidden to mind – and provided you advertise and price it right, you can sell them by the 100,000. Keep on making duff cars and it may take years for your company to be in trouble – look how long it has taken Fiat to decline.
For every well-publicized disaster, there are many more which never come to light. We all know that the VW Beetle lasted forever except, that is, the 1961 version. VW bought steel from the Soviet Union and the cars rotted before your eyes. People who were in VW’s PR department at the time still boast of how they busied the story.
