Porsche GT3R Hybrid by Spark – Model Car Profile

By Will Silk
Porsche 997 GT3R Hybrid model carSpark Models has been around for a little over a decade now, and recently the company released a 1:43 scale replica of Porsche’s all new GT3R Hybrid racing car.  Selecting the GT3R Hybrid to model in 1:43 scale offers Porsche enthusiasts the opportunity to snatch what is probably the most technologically innovative car to ever emerge from the Stuttgart firm.
The 997 GT3R Hybrid made its public debut at Geneva in 2010, and when the company set about racing the car, immediately some controversy erupted in how to properly classify the vehicle.  The power for the 997 GT3R Hybrid comes from a 480hp flat six accompanied by two electric motors, one for each front wheel and each producing 80hp, or a combined output of nearly 640hp.  The kicker to Porsche’s set up is that it was designed with long distance racing in mind from the outset, and therefore relies on a flywheel generator that supplies electrical power to a storage device each time the driver utilizes the brakes.
In October of 2010, Porsche arrived at the Road Atlanta circuit in Braselton, Georgia to contest the Petit Le Mans race.  Now an ALMS staple, the race saw the new 997 GT3R Hybrid placed in a class of its own dubbed “GTH”.  With the team of Dumas, Bernhard, and Rockenfeller behind the wheel, the trio drove Porsche’s revolutionary new machine to an 18th place finish overall, beating out some big names in endurance racing as well.
Spark’s 1:43 scale piece does a great job of replicating the car in its Geneva show colors of white and orange.  The decals are of very high quality and all are placed accurately in regards to the genuine car.  What truly captures the eye is the detail that Spark puts into the interior of the Porsche.  All the wiring and safety belts are authentically painted and the roll cage detail is really nicely done.  The wheels and tires are very well done, and the brake rotor and caliper detail is very good as well.
Many vendors are retailing the piece featured here for around $60 USD, and the amount of detail you receive for that price is quite good.  The Spark 997 GT3R Hybrid in 1:43 scale will make an excellent addition to any collection, especially one that is centered on the cars of Dr. Porsche.
