The 2013 edition of the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance was, as always, held the third Sunday of August on the incomparable 18th fairway of the Pebble Beach Golf Links in Pebble Beach, California.
The 63rd edition of the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance honored Lincoln, Simplex, Vanvooren Coachwork, Aston Martin Centennial, Lamborghini, Porsche 911, BMW 507, Indianapolis Roadsters and French Motorcycles. Notable displays included gatherings of four Prinz Heinrich Benz Race Cars, 27 Alfa Romeo 8Cs and a pairing of the only two custom-built BMW 507s.
The Pebble Beach Tour d’Elegance presented by Rolex saw more than 200 historic cars parade on a 88-mile course along the 17-Mile Drive, winding through the Central Coast including, for the first time in a decade, the Corkscrew turn around the track at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. The cars then made their way down to Big Sur and back, stopping in Carmel-by-the-Sea for lunch and then back to the Equestrian Center at Pebble Beach.
At dawn on Sunday, August 18th, 248 cars including 48 non-American entries, rolled onto the famous 18th fairway of Pebble Beach Golf Links for the ultimate test of precise restoration – the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. Vehicles were judged for historical accuracy, technical merit and style, but not for their speed – although one of the key criteria is that all cars must be drivable. Best of Show was presented to a 1934 Packard 1108 Twelve Dietrich Convertible Victoria, owned by Joseph & Margie Cassini III of New Jersey.
Pink Floyd drummer and noted enthusiast Nick Mason exhibited his 1953 Aston Martin Ulster and 1953 Ferrari 250 MM Pinin Farina Berlinetta. Mason commented, “I don’t come here to win prizes – I’ve seen the standard of the cars! It’s an honour to be included on the lawn, just to have the cars here is great. This is an extraordinary event, with a lot of history.”
In addition to Tim Scott’s Pebble Beach Concours and Pebble Beach Tour photo galleries, we offer the following 237 images that further show the quality and depth of cars on the Pebble Beach show field. We split up the pictures into two galleries. The first gallery starting below features our favorite images, all displayed in the full-width view of Sports Car Digest, while the second gallery can be found on the last page of the article and gives a comprehensive view of all the photographs.

Seems like photography timing is reversed; i.e., early (6 – 8am ) used to be best for less spectators but this year the crowds were there at dawn. Then while the awards took place around 2 pm, the crowds moved toward the ramp and opened up the car perspective. Thus one has waited 8 hours for some unobstructed photos. The whole Monterey Week, especially Thurs. thru Sunday, has become a zoo without any fences.
You nailed it Steve. There was zero bonus for getting up at 4:30am this year to shoot Pebble.
Great photos. Next year the event should separate the “I restored it myself” owner’s group from the “I paid the most” people.
The closest you will come to self restored is the Preservation class; i.e., probably mechanically rebuilt but not unpatined.
that Alfa Superflow is one sexy lady. Great pics.
What a perfect color for that elegant 1938 Alfa !!
“… little dingy in the background.” dinghy, ed. “dingy” is what your whites are if you never use bleach on them.
Thanks Stephen. We corrected the dingy mistake…
That Ford GT40 mark I was NOT the only Mark I to run Le Mans Twice. Ford GT40 Chassis P/1075WON Le Mans twice Gulf colors number six .
Did it run in Mark I configuration for both wins? I thought it was upgraded to a different spec for the second win.
Hey – Just came across this photo of us for the first time while searching the web. We are the dark blue 1925 Aston with the big 3 on it. It is awesome! Any chance we could get the file so we can make a frameable copy? Please let me know. Thanks! Wendy
