A recent resurgence of interest in vintage HMODs (and similar small-bore racers) has led to the formation of the H-Modified Racing Club. The club’s first effort is the encouragement of active HMOD racing through the coordination of a racing series. The series will be held in conjunction with established vintage racing events.
The SCCA recognized H-Modified as a class in 1953, creating a venue for 500-cc-750-cc racers with modifications. Specifications were kept to a minimum, opening the door to basement and garage mechanics, and creating a popular class that welcomed innovation. The General Competition Rules required two seats, at least one door, ability to carry a spare…and not much else. In 1963, the class expanded to include engines up to 850-cc, and in 1967/’68 the class evolved into D-Sports Racing.
The new group’s first event will be at the VSCCA Spring Sprints (May 7-8, 2021). The venue is Lime Rock Park, a 1.5-mile track that is well-suited to HMOD racing. Because the Spring Sprints also host the VSCCA’s driving school, there are few excuses to keep potential HMOD racers away – whether they are dusting off a car they raced “in the day,” or restoring an HMOD that is new to them. The second event will be at the 2021 Put-in-Bay Sports Car Races. The organizers have named H-Modified as a featured class, so the group organizers are hoping for a good showing from the class. (www.pibroadrace.com)
