Wrath of the Cobra
Dear Editor,
In regards to your excellent story on the Shelby King Cobra (November 2014), both Ludwig Heimrath and Eppie Wietzes told me that the Coopers were overwhelmed by the Ford V8 power and that they required careful handling. Both of the Coopers that Comstock Racing purchased were destroyed, one in a testing accident at Mosport and the other in a catastrophic crash at the old Westwood circuit in British Columbia. I have attached some photos.
The first photo (above) shows Chuck Rathgeb shaking hands with Carroll Shelby, and I assume it’s on the purchase of the two Comstock Cooper King Cobras. The other is a photo of the wrecked Comstock King Cobra. Eppie Wietzes was severely injured in the Westwood crash.
