This painting actually depicts the start of the Nürburgring 1000 Kms in 1960. However, everyone familiar with this unique type of starting formation always refers to it as the “Le Mans start”. Running to your car, jumping in, starting the car, then taking off was the way early sports car racing was started. Due to strict safety regulations, 1969 was the last time this type of start was held at Le Mans. Other tracks soon followed. At that time the Nürburgring was a 14-mile-a-lap road course that required both a fast and reliable car. This painting shows which drivers really had the art of hand-and-foot coordination perfected to get their racecar out first and in the lead.
