At one of the Goodwood Revival meetings, I was chatting with Rob Wilson, racing driver, bass guitarist and Kiwi, not necessarily in that order. Soon, we were joined by Howden Ganley. Then Eoin Young and our mutual pal from New Zealand, Michael Clarke, appeared. As far as the eye could see there were Kiwis. I reckoned that the only person looking after the farm must have been Chris Amon.
It is often the case that the Tasman Series is thought of merely as Pro-Am racing Down Under. Some drivers escaped from winter in the Northern Hemisphere to enjoy racing and lavish hospitality, while earning extra money. It is easy to forget that the passage was two-way and that motor racing overall was enriched. What has intrigued me is how many there once were from New Zealand, and why that was. I’ve asked several dozen Kiwis and the answer has been consistent.
