The 13th Annual Hilton Head Island Concours d’Elegance was held November 2 under sunny but chilly skies, with winners chosen in more than two dozen classes along with special honors for Best in Show, People’s Choice and the Paul Doerring Award. The event featured Jaguar as its honored marque, as well as celebrating the 100th anniversary of Maserati, 50 years of the Ford Mustang and the Lincoln Continental Mark II.
The top honor, Best in Show, was presented to Richard Workman of Windermere, Florida, whose 1937 Bugatti Type 57C (photo, center) is one of only 17 ever built, while the People’s Choice Award, determined by a popular vote of attendees, went to the 1929 Chrysler Model 75 Dual Cowl Phaeton (photo, center) of Robert and Alice Jepson from Savannah, Georgia. The new Paul Doerring Award is named for one of the event’s founders who recently passed away, and was presented to the 1958 Studebaker Golden Hawk (photo right) owned by Mark James of Lancaster, Pennsylvania.
More than 500 cars were on display, and among the automotive industry luminaries in attendance were Edsel B. Ford II, the great-grandson of Ford Motor Company founder Henry Ford who served as the event’s Honorary Chairman, Ian Callum, Director of Design for Jaguar; J Mays, retired Chief Designer for Ford; 1986 Indy 500 winner Bobby Rahal, five-time Le Mans winner Hurley Haywood, Formula 5000 triple champion Brian Redman and 1996 Le Mans 24 Hours winner Davy Jones.
