The Gooding and Company Scottsdale Auction 2013 was held January 18-19 at the Scottsdale Fashion Square in Arizona, resulting in $52.49 million in total sales and a 97% sell-through rate. The total from the two-day sale was up 31% from last year, with seven cars selling above the $2 million mark.

“With our significantly higher total for fewer cars sold at this year’s Scottsdale Auctions, the 2013 season looks brighter than ever for the high-end collector car market,” said David Gooding, president and founder of Gooding & Company.“In line with this market strength, we also continue to develop and improve as a company. The Gooding & Company team is proud to continue providing the best quality service and presentation possible.”

The top result at the Gooding and Company Scottsdale 2013 auction went to the 1958 Ferrari 250 GT LWB California Spider that sold for $8,250,000, a record for a steel-bodied long-wheelbase Cal Spider. Other notable results included the 1959 Porsche 718 RSK at $3,135,000, the one-off 1957 Maserati 150 GT Spider that made $3,080,000 and the 1947 Cisitalia 202 SMM Spider Nuvolari that sold post-block for $650,000.

Original, low-mileage preservation cars with limited-ownership history brought strong results, sometimes doubling estimates for the best models. Examples include a 1956 Lancia Aurelia B24S Spider America that sold for $803,000 (estimate of $400,000 – $450,000), a 1965 Shelby 289 Cobra that sold for $1,320,000 (estimate of $850,000 – $1,100,000), and a 1956 Mercedes-Benz 300 Sc Cabriolet that sold for $825,000, doubling its estimate of $400,000 – $450,000.

Additional highlights included the 1969 Chevrolet Corvette L88 Roadster for $825,000, a new record for the model, the 1958 Ferrari 250 GT Coupe Speciale that sold for $2,365,000 and the 1933 Disappearing-Top Murphy Roadster that brought $2,695,000.

Gooding and Company offered 104 automobiles for sale, with 101 finding a new owner, reflecting a 97% sales rate. Total sales volume was $52,492,427, inclusive of buyer’s premiums. The average price per car sold was $519,727.
