1973 Porsche 917 Can-Am Spyder auction

The Gooding and Company Amelia Island Auction 2012 was staged Friday, March 9th on the grounds of the Amelia Island Plantation in Florida, resulting in more than $36 million in sales and a 91% sell-through rate.

Gooding and Company offered 77 collector cars at its 3rd annual Amelia Island Auction, headlined by the spectacular Porsche racing cars from the Drendel Family Collection. Top sale went to the 1973 Porsche 917/30 Can-Am Spyder that sold for $4.4 million, making it the most valuable Porsche ever sold at auction.1973 Porsche 917 Can-Am Spyder auctionOther highlights of the Matthew Drendel Collection included the 1974 Porsche 911 Carrera RSR Turbo 2.14 that brought $3,245,000, the 1976 Porsche 935/76 at $2,530,000 and the Team Holbert Lowenbrau 1984 Porsche 962 that made $1,925,000. The latter was introduced by racing legend Derek Bell, who successfully piloted the 962 to numerous victories, including back-to-back wins at the Daytona 24 Hours.

In addition to the 17 Drendel Collection Porsches that collectively sold for more than $17.7 million, there were several other notable sales at the 2012 Gooding Amelia Island auction, such as the 1955 Porsche 550/1500 RS Spyder that made $3,685,000, the 1951 Ferrari 212 Inter Coupe that sold for $1,375,000 and the 1948 Tucker 48 that brought $1,320,000.
