Fred Peters and Charles Betz – Ferrari Collectors & Restorers
Betz and Peters once owned the one-off 1955 Ferrari 375 America Coupe built for Fiat’s Gianni Agnelli. Though the pair mechanically sorted the car out, they couldn’t bring themselves to cosmetically restore it.
VR: How did you first come to cars? I know you both go way back with your involvement in the hobby, but what got you started originally?
FP: I was born and grew up in Santa Monica, while Charles grew up in South Gate, which was the car capital of America, where the guys were taking old parts from cars and making hot rods. So we grew up on that. In the late ’30s, early ’40s our big brothers were building the cars and we were hanging out watching it all. Sometimes they’d put us in the rumble seat or in the back—or sometimes in the trunk!—and we’d drive out to the bean fields. So, hanging out with the big brothers who were building cars, that was it. We came to cars just naturally, sharing the enthusiasm of our brothers and older kids at that time. Charles’ experience may be similar.
