More than 14,200 motoring enthusiasts at the Footman James Sywell Classic Pistons and Props enjoyed a rare treat when the Leyton House Formula One car, designed by Adrian Newey, and Emerson Fittipaldi’s 1994 Penske PC23 Indycar (above, Kary Jiggle photo) stormed up the runway of Sywell Aerodrome.
Event Director Tom Siddall said: “Now five years old, Sywell Classic has firmly established itself in the motoring calendar, mainly because where else would you be able to witness these cars in action? The paddock also allows the public access to walk among all the cars — be they single seaters, F1, dragsters, hot rods or even motorcycles — so you get to see them up close as well as hear them.”
While the racing cars tore up the runway, it was the dragsters and hot rods in the Street Car Shootout on the Sprint Strip that caused a smoky sensation with their burnouts and head to head sprint racing.
Up in the air, there were breathtaking displays from the Yakovlevs and The Blades, as well as the Breitling Wingwalkers, the world’s only formation wingwalking team, who all celebrated the end of their display season with some thrilling maneuvers.
There were also fantastic static club displays and foot-tapping music from vintage singer Jayne Darling and rockabilly group the Rock-ola Rockets, with plenty of people dressed in their finest vintage gear to add to the brilliant atmosphere.
