To Salute Dan Gurney’s selection as Featured Guest for the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion, we asked the All American Racer to make a tough call
It’s like tasking a parent to choose between children. Each is dearest for different reasons. Nonetheless, we believed it not inappropriate to ask Dan Gurney to name his five favorite Eagles, and were pleased when he agreed. An interesting selection has he made, too, with a pair of cars he raced himself and three that other men drove. Equally noteworthy is the fact that his five choices carry five different types of engines, from free-breathing stock block V-8 to tightly wound turbocharged twin-cam four.
That same kind of diversity hallmarked Dan’s driving career, as he became the first driver to win races in all the major global categories, and his time as a team owner and car constructor was spent equally multi-dimensionally. Never one to be satisfied with the status quo, he always looked to the horizon in search of the next discovery, and from that continuing quest crafted a career that has earned him featured recognition at August’s annual vintage racecar festival on California’s Monterey Peninsula. He joins Juan Manuel Fangio as the second man ever to be so honored.
