Organizers of the Centennial Celebration of the Vanderbilt Races have announced that the fifth iteration of this unique event will be held on September 14, 2008, on the grounds of the Nassau County Museum of Art in Roslyn, New York.
In 1904, William K. Vanderbilt, Jr. challenged European automakers to the first international motor race to be held in America—on the byways of Nassau County, New York. The year 2008 marks the centennial of America’s first Vanderbilt Cup victory by George Robertson in a Locomobile, which appropriately baptized the first leg of Vanderbilt’s prophetic Long Island Motor Parkway, America’s first suburban paved motorway.
Celebrating this American milestone, over 100 years of automotive evolution will be celebrated at this year’s event with timed demonstration runs for cars with a racing heritage (dodging hay bales on the museum’s service roads) and a Concours de Provenance for vehicles with special historic significance. Additionally, an exhibition of automotive art and memorabilia are being planned at the Childs Frick mansion.
