Cars from the SCCA’s legendary Can-Am series will be in the spotlight at this year’s inaugural Monterey Spring Classic, scheduled for the weekend of May 19-21 at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. The unlimited, big-bore series first raced at the Central California circuit in 1966, when Phil Hill registered the only Can-Am victory for Chaparral, and last raced there in 1973 (above), when Mark Donohue scored the fifth of his six wins during that championship year with Penske Racing’s Porsche 917/30.
“The Can-Am group is a popular one for fans and participants alike as they represent the true definition of win at any cost,” noted Gillian Campbell, the raceway’s CEO and general manager. “These cars retain their characteristic look and, certainly, sounds and they are a welcoming site in their spiritual home.”
The 1966-1974 Can-Am group will be one of nine race groups at the inaugural Spring Classic. The others are 1966-1972 Trans-Am, 1967-1984 Formula One, 1967-1972 Formula B, 1973-1984 SCCA Production GT Cars, 1973-1979 Formula Atlantic, 1966-1972 Trans-Am 2.5 Liter, 1983-2007 World Sports Car — Le Mans Prototype and 1979-2006 Historic Stock Cars. Entries remain open until March 31.
