The 2nd Annual Brickyard Vintage Racing Invitational, organized by the Sportscar Vintage Racing Association at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway will take place this weekend in the Hoosier capital. It all begins tomorrow, Thursday June 11, with group Practice Sessions and road course qualifying and continues Friday with further qualifying sessions, practice for the Pro-Am race—featuring 33 drivers with Indy 500 experience, paired with the owners of the Camaros, Mustangs and Corvettes they will drive—and demonstration runs on the IMS oval.
Racing will commence Saturday morning with SVRA’s 11 race groups racing virtually non-stop throughout the day, highlighted by the Pro-Am race on the infield road course scheduled for a 1:35 p.m. start. Sunday’s schedule features an hour-long Vintage/Classic Enduro and a 90-minute Historic GTP/GT Enduro in the morning and an Unser Family exhibition with five members of the famous racing family—Bobby, Al, Al Jr., Johnny and Robby—all driving vintage Indycars on the oval just after noon.
Also on the weekend schedule is Motostalgia, a high-end car auction, at 3 p.m. on Friday, where among the cars up for bidding is the turbine-powered Lotus 56 that Graham Hill drove in the 1968 Indianapolis 500. Also, weather permitting, attendees will have the opportunity to get a balloon’s-eye view of the historic Speedway from a hot air balloon tethered in the infield, and a half dozen balloons will be launched skyward each morning between 6:30 and 8 to commemorate the 1909 balloon races that were the first events of any kind at the facility.
