1970 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona Spider Conversion Sold for $390,500

The Bonhams Boca Raton Auction 2013 was held Saturday, February 23rd at the Boca Raton Resort and Club in Florida, resulting in $3.75 million in total sales and an 85% sell-through rate.
Held in conjunction with the Boca Raton Concours d’Elegance, the Bonhams sale featured a selection of American and European motorcars that attracted bidders from around the world, and buyers from as far afield as mainland Europe and the Middle East. The top result at the auction went to the former Mrs. E.L. Cord 1930 Duesenberg Model J Torpedo Phaeton that sold to an American buyer for $698,500.
Other notable results at the 2013 Bonhams Boca Raton auction included the original ‘Plexi’ nose, European-delivered 1970 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona Spyder Conversion that brought $390,500, the 1963 Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud III, later adapted to Drophead Coupe guise, that sold for $264,000, the Concours condition 1962 Jaguar XKE Series I 3.8-litre Coupe that went home to an East Coast enthusiast for $165,000 and the 1965 Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint Speciale that made $143,000.
Although not the top-selling automobile, the sale of the 1962 Citroen 2CV Sahara 4×4 was met with a brisk and lengthy battle between multiple phone bidders. Auctioneer Rupert Banner did his best to referee the bidding frenzy at the rostrum, while the audience in the filled-to-capacity tent was treated to a humorous battle for the rare French two-engined car. Ultimately, a collector from the Middle East clinched the winning bid at $80,300.
Says Rupert Banner, Bonhams VP of Business Development in New York, “This was a busy, successful and fun debut auction, supported by a large local crowd. It delivered results beyond our expectations including a handful of records and continues an already strong 2013 season for Bonhams US Motoring department.”
